Career and Leadership Program

1. Participate as a mentor to other participants.
2. Run a workshop or present a poster related to career development or leadership.
3. Write a personal essay about your experiences, and share valuable lessons and experiences, to be published in the program booklet.
4. Participate as a president of a KSEA student chapter or as a young generation representative of a KSEA local chapter.

Technical Program

5. Present a lecture or a poster of emerging research topics, new trends in industry, or scientific topics of general interest.
6. Write a survey paper of emerging research topics, new trends in industry, or scientific topics of general interest, to be published in the program booklet.

Additional information for each of the above is listed below.  Each avenue requires additional supplementary material to complete your application.  If you select the mentoring avenue, please choose one other alternate avenue as the program committee will choose the choice that best meets the needs of the conference.

Avenues for Participation

Please choose at least one of the following ways to participate, and provide the required supplementary materials in your application. Your application will not be considered unless you provide all the required supplementary materials.

1. Mentoring
   • We encourage the mentoring of the younger participants by the more accomplished participants.
   • Selected mentors will be paired with a younger participant of the conference, and unpaired mentors will contribute to a workshop at the conference.
   • The mentor will be responsible to work on a small presentation project (~15 hours) prior to the conference. Paired mentors will work on a joint project with their mentees, and unpaired mentors will work on material for the conference workshops.
   • Presentation projects may include a technical survey of an area or an examination of topics related to leadership and career development. For example, a mentor might be asked to present a short presentation on their day to day lives, or about the habits that help them succeed in life. Other examples might include a survey of wind energy companies, or an examination of cultural stereotypes of Korean-Americans in the workplace.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • Roughly 400 words that covers the following topics: important experiences that have shaped your life, what you can share with your prospective mentee, and why you want to be a mentor.
2. Career and Leadership Poster or Workshop
   • Run a workshop or present a poster related to career development or leadership (for example, on networking, financial planning, communication, team management, etc.)
   • Workshops run from 20 to 50 minutes, and posters will be presented at the networking fair.
   • The Program Committee will decide which presentations will be a workshop or a poster. You will be contacted before you are assigned to a workshop.
   • Accepted workshop instructors will submit their presentation slides before the conference and bring supplementary materials (like active learning props, handouts) to the conference. Poster presenters will bring their printed posters to the conference.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • At least 200 words of an abstract on your proposed workshop or poster.
     • At least 200 words of your background on the subject.
     • Indicate whether you prefer to hold a workshop or present a poster.
3. Personal Essay
   • Share your stories, experiences and/or lessons to be published in the program booklet.
   • The essay must be of interest to our general participants and may be amusing, inspiring, literary, or informational.
   • Sample topics include: Leadership, starting a local organization, research expeditions, unique work experiences, being a Korean-American, suggestions for increasing the young generation involvement in KSEA.
   • Accepted essay writers will submit an essay (i) at least 1000 words, with (ii) at least one picture.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • At least 100 words of an abstract on the topic of your essay.
     • At least 100 words of the introductory paragraph of your essay.
4. KSEA Student Chapter President/Local Chapter YG Representative
   • We encourage the KSEA student chapter presidents and KSEA local chapter young generation representatives to participate in the conference.
   • Only 1 applicant will be accepted per student or local chapter for this avenue of participation.
   • Accepted presidents or representatives will submit a poster on the activities of their KSEA student or YG section of their local chapter and then bring a printed poster to the conference.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • At least 200 words of an abstract on your involvement with KSEA.
     • Recommendation letter by your KSEA local chapter president.  (Visit the KSEA website for chapter listings.)
5. Technical Lecture or Poster
   • Present on emerging research topics or new trends in industry.
   • Presentations must be accessible to a general technical audience.
   • Lecture presentations will run 20-30 minutes, and posters will be presented at the Technical Poster Session.
   • The Program Committee will decide which presentations will become lectures and which will become posters. You will be contacted before you are assigned a lecture presentation.
   • Accepted lecture presenters will submit presentation slides before the conference, and accepted poster presenters will bring their printed posters to the conference. The presentation must include references.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • Between 80 and 200 words that describes the topic and its importance. Please include references if available.
     • Brief description on your background in the subject.
6. Technical Survey Paper
   • Write a survey paper on emerging research topics or new trends in industry.
   • Survey papers must be accessible to a general technical audience and will be published in the program booklet.
   • Accepted writers will submit a survey paper (i) between 700 and 1000 words, and (ii) must include references.
   • Required supplementary materials for the application are:
     • Between 80 and 200 words that describes the topic and its importance. Please include references if available.
     • Brief description on your background in the subject.

Please choose at least one of the above ways to participate, and provide the required supplementary materials in your application. Your application will not be considered unless you provide all the required supplementary materials.  Go back to the Apply page.

The Sixth Annual Young Generation Technical and Leadership Conference (YGTLC) hosted by the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) and the Korea-U.S. Science Cooperation Center (KUSCO) is the flagship event for Korean-American young professionals, graduate and undergraduate students. The three-day program includes talks on emerging technologies, speeches from distinguished industry and academic leaders, career development, networking, and leadership programs.

This year’s conference focuses on the changes that have come with the economic slowdown. The YGTLC will feature speakers and workshops that engage the participants on the ways that innovation and leadership can help to bring a brighter tomorrow.

1. Be present by Friday morning 8:30am and stay until Sunday 1:00pm.

You must contact us prior to the conference if you will miss any part of the conference. If you are found absent during the conference, you may be asked to forfeit your travel stipend based on half-day increments.

All participants will be provided with lodging and meals from Friday morning until Sunday noon.  To see the start and end times for each day see the Schedule page.

The maximum travel reimbursement amount based on region is as follows:

• West Coast (CA, OR, WA, etc): $175
• Midwest (IL, TX, etc): $150
• Over 300 miles away on East Coast (MA, FL, etc): $125
• Over 200 miles away (NYC, Raleigh, Pittsburgh, etc): $60
• Over 100 miles away (Phili, Richmond, etc): $30
• Over 30 miles away (Baltimore, etc): $10
• An additional $10 to the driver for each additional participant in carpool

Transportation between the airport and the hotel will not be reimbursed.  Shuttle service information though is available in the Arrival section.

You will be required to submit a printed receipt of your travel expenses so please bring a copy of your (air/bus/train/rental) receipts to the conference.  Drivers of personally-owned-vehicles will be reimbursed the maximum amounts based on distance listed above. Reimbursement forms will be distributed and collected at the end of the conference on Sunday.  Then reimbursement checks will be mailed out by the end of January.

For transportation to/from the hotel, we recommend taking the SuperShuttle or sharing a taxi with other participants.  Participants are expected to cover their own local transportation between the airport and the hotel.  Please be sure indicate your flight arrival information in the Participant Registration Form (emailed to you) when you register to be placed on a ride-sharing list.

Parking

For those driving to the conference, there is complementary on-site parking at the Fairview Park Marriott.

Check-In

Guests are encouraged to arrive on Thursday as the conference begins promptly on Friday at 8:30am.  We will cover expenses for Thursday evening if requested in the Participant Registration Form (emailed to participants).  You do not need to make hotel reservations yourself, as we will be booking a room for you.

Hotel check-in time is 4:00pm on Thursday (1/7/2010).

Upon checking-in you should mention that you are with the KSEA YGTLC to get our group reservation and your room key.   If you arrive at the hotel before the check-in time and a room is not available for you at that time, you may store your luggage with the hotel’s front desk while you wait for an available room.

Credit card information will be requested of conference guests upon checking-in.  Costs for room reservations and taxes will not be charged to your card account.  Though incidentals such as snack, bottled water, in-room internet, and pay-per-view movies are the responsibility of the individuals, will not be covered by KSEA.

Hotel check-out time is 12:00pm on Sunday (1/10/2010).

Roommates

Participants of the same gender will be assigned to a single room.  We will try our best to assign two participants per room with two beds.  Please indicate your roommate preferences in the Participant Registration Form when registering.

If you are coming with non-participant guests such as family, you must pay for your own room.  If you are expecting to bring guests, please contact us at ygksea@gmail.com, before you register to discuss lodging and meals options.

Your destination is the Fairview Park Marriott hotel in Falls Church, Virginia just outside of Washington D.C.  See the Hotel page for the exact address.  As your mode of travel may be affected by the amount of your travel stipend, see the Reimbursement page for exact amounts.

Please remember that in order to qualify for the full reimbursement, you must be present by 8:30am Friday (1/8/2010) morning for the on-site registration and stay until 1:00pm on Sunday.  We will provide lodging on Thursday evening so we recommend you arriving Thursday (1/7/2010) night.  Also, please visit the Sightseeing page if you are interested in taking a tour after the conference on Sunday or Monday.

Airplane

For travel by air, we recommend flying into:

• Dulles International Airport (IAD)
• Reagan National Airport (DCA)

We do not recommend flying into Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) because it is over an hour away from the Marriott hotel and it may make transportation to the conference difficult.

Car

For travel by car, we recommend carpooling with others in your region.   The  driver of a carpool will receive extra money for each additional participant in carpool.   See the Reimbursement page for the exact amount.  Please be sure to fill out a regional carpool section of the participant registration form when you register for those that are interested in driving, renting a car, or receiving a ride.

Bus

For travel by bus, you may chose from the following providers:

Train

Use the fare finder on the website to plan your trip to Washington DC – Union station.  Public transportation must be taken from Union Station to the Dunn Loring station.
